About The Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Model-Based Design Engineer to help establish and advance Model-Based Design (MBD) capabilities across Hermeus' flight software, GNC, and flight sciences teams.
In this role, you will develop and implement Model-Based Design (MBD) workflows supporting key applications, including 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) vehicle simulations, pilot training simulators, Monte Carlo analyses, automated code generation, and system verification. Using MATLAB/Simulink and related tools, you will bridge control system design, software development, and verification while helping teams establish scalable, model-driven engineering practices.
You will play a key role in establishing the tools, processes, and infrastructure needed to develop, generate, integrate, and validate production-quality flight software from system and control models. This includes defining model-based development standards, implementing automated code generation pipelines, and integrating generated software with embedded flight systems and SIL/HIL test environments.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience implementing Model-Based Design workflows in aerospace, defense, automotive, or other safety-critical environments. We are looking for an engineer who can take ownership of building these capabilities, work across engineering disciplines, and help drive adoption of model-based development throughout the organization.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain high-fidelity, 6-DOF aircraft simulation models using MATLAB/Simulink to support vehicle development, pilot training, Monte Carlo analysis, and system verification.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Model-Based Design workflows using MATLAB, Simulink, and related tools to support simulation development and integration.
- Build and expand simulation capabilities that integrate aircraft dynamics, sensors, actuators, and flight software.
- Establish model-based development processes across flight software, GNC, and flight sciences engineering teams, initially focused on simulation with future expansion into control system development.
- Develop and support Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) verification workflows.
- Implement automated code generation workflows to translate Simulink models into production-quality C/C++ software for simulation and embedded flight systems.
- Define best practices for model architecture, configuration management, code generation, testing, and verification.
- Integrate generated software with existing simulation environments, flight software architectures, embedded targets, and hardware interfaces.
- Build automated testing and continuous integration processes for model-based development.
- Collaborate closely with GNC, flight software, avionics, systems, and test teams to ensure consistency between models, generated code, and deployed systems.
- Debug and resolve issues involving model behavior, generated code, software integration, and system performance.
- Support requirements traceability, model verification, and validation activities for flight-critical software.
- Help drive adoption of Model-Based Design practices through technical guidance, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in Model-Based Design, embedded software development, controls engineering, or related technical fields.
- Strong hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development workflows.
- Experience using Simulink Coder, Embedded Coder, or similar tools to generate executable C/C++ software from models.
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, or improving Model-Based Design workflows in an engineering environment.
- Experience integrating generated code with embedded software or real-time systems.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and familiarity with embedded software development practices.
- Understanding of control systems, dynamic systems, and software verification methodologies.
- Experience with MIL, SIL, or HIL testing and validation.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across models, generated code, and software interfaces.
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams and take ownership of complex technical initiatives.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience establishing Model-Based Design processes or infrastructure across multiple engineering teams.
- Advanced experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow, Simulink Test, Simulink Coder, and Embedded Coder.
- Experience implementing model-based code generation pipelines for production or flight-critical embedded software.
- Familiarity with model-based software architecture, reusable model libraries, and modeling standards.
- Experience integrating model-based development workflows into CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software configuration management.
- Experience with real-time embedded targets and platforms such as Speedgoat, dSPACE, NI VeriStand, or OPAL-RT.
- Experience developing or integrating flight controls, GNC, avionics, or autonomous systems.
- Familiarity with aerospace software development standards such as DO-178C and DO-331.
- Knowledge of model verification, code verification, requirements traceability, and software qualification processes.
- Experience with aircraft, UAVs, spacecraft, automotive control systems, or other complex safety-critical platforms.
- Strong ownership mindset with the ability to introduce new development practices, solve ambiguous technical problems, and help engineering teams iterate quickly.
